We know the future is plant-based when it comes to food, but the tendency to name anything with a slightly meaty texture as ‘steak’ just doesn’t sit too well. Now a recipe that likens bread to, erm, ‘steak’ could be taking things a little too far.
Ok, we can allow the occasional ‘cauliflower steak’ or ‘eggplant steak’. But this recipe from food website Basically has plated up a slice of sourdough toast with parmesan cheese, and labelled it ‘bread steak’.
The Instagram post explained: “When @davidtamarkin stopped eating steak, he still craved a slab of something lavish at the center of his plate—and a cauliflower ‘steak’ just wasn’t going to cut it. Enter: The Bread Steak.”
“It’s a parmesan-crusted chunk of pan-roasted sourdough that’s decadent, fatty, salty, and (if you do it right) downright meaty.”
“Y’all are really trying to convince people that cheesy bread tastes like steak… thank you for starting my day off with a laugh,” says another.
“A bread steak. A lettuce steak. A cauliflower steak. None of them are steak,” pointed out another.
It does look delicious, but this is most definitely not steak. This is toast. Is the next trend going to ask us whether we want our toast medium rare?
